Amanda Mathis is a fine artist
working mostly in acrylics. She lives, paints and exhibits in the historic
artists' colony of Nashville, Indiana. The style of work has been labeled
"primitive" but Mathis prefers the term "educated primitive." Painting
scenes familiar to all, the artist is also known for pulling ideas out of
memory and imagination, then adding a touch of humor and whimsy. Mathis does not use facial features on human or animal, thus requiring the viewer to interact with the painting. Viewers are able to impose their own ideas as to feelings and emotions that the subjects in the painting may be displaying. Due to this unique aspect of a Mathis painting, each viewer has a different and ever-changing concept of the scene being depicted. Mathis uses canvas and papers and also
incorporates painted frames into some art works. Acrylic is the main
medium, but inks are also used. |
